Subject: Waterloo Action Centre Rent Increase
Dear Cllr Holland,
I am writing to protest about the proposed rent increase of £45,000 for Waterloo Action Centre, Baylis Road SE1, which puts the future of the centre in jeopardy.
More than 30,000 people pass through the doors of Waterloo Action Centre in an average year. The centre houses many vital services for Lambeth residents such as free legal advice, free benefits advice and free computer and internet help. As you are no doubt aware WAC receives no funding from Lambeth Council and costs the taxpayer nothing.
I understand you have carried out a review of voluntary sector assets and believe this is a fairer system. However, this plan results in an increased centralisation of community services which simply doesn’t work. It is WAC’s roots in the community and the trust and reputation it has built over more than 45 years serving the people of Lambeth which allows it to be so effective.
I urge you to reconsider this decision. It would not only be a tragedy for many of the most vulnerable people in the borough who rely on the centre for support, but is a very poor reflection of Lambeth Council and its involvement in and understanding of the community it is supposed to serve.
Yours sincerely
